Characterization of Winston Smith

Winston Smith lives in Airstrip One, a province in the state Oceania. He is the protagonist of the novel “Nineteen Eighty-Four” by George Orwell. Winston is 39 years old, thin and has blonde hair. His varicose ulcer above his right ankle, his red face, rough skin and skinny body effect a very unhealthy look, caused of his living conditions. He is a drinker and smoker (has regular coughing attacks) and is suppressed by the government like many other inhabitants. Winston has a wife, who is not in contact with him. He lives in a dilapidated building and is member of the Party, the controlling force in this dystopia.
Furthermore, Winston works as a clerk in the Record-Department of the Ministry of Truth. Its mission is to modify new reports and news, in order that these correspond with former statements from the Party. It is a despicable job, but Winston loves it because he can show his creativity. He is a simple, sensible and peace loving man. Winston is intelligent, but cautious and lives an easy life. He is unsatisfied with his current living situation and the whole societal relationships, but seems to look destiny straight in the eye, until he begins to write a diary and to read a book by Emmanuel Goldstein. The decision to write a diary results from his thoughtful nature. But the thought police controls the thoughts from the whole population and restrict Winston as well. The character changes his attitude towards everything in Oceania, after he meets Julia and O’brien. O’brien is a member of the Inner Party whom Winston believes is secretly a member of The Brotherhood, a resistance organisation dedicated to overthrowing the Party’s dictatorship. Julia is a member of the junior Anti Sex League. Winston feels both hate and desire towards her.
The narrator describes Winston as a very untypical hero, but the reader of the novel easily identify with the protagonist. The whole character of Winston fits perfectly in this story, because it can affect every reader deeply.

A comment on Kellyanne Conway’s alternative facts

A main part of Donald Trumps election campaign manipulated the own voters and wavering voters with statements, which did not base on facts. The key was to use provocative claims to polarize. This was the way how Donald Trump and his supporters argue during the election and this is how he brainwashed a big part of the american population. Therewith it was possible to win the presidential election. As we, in Germany saw Donald Trumps speeches and the claims und offensive statements, which were indiscriminately spoken,
we never would have thought, that he could have success at the presidential election in this way.

It is unimiginable that a man with such a radical method act now as the mighties man of the world und lead a state, which has a huge responsibility towards the whole world. And now he continues spreading questionable statements and manipulating the population just a short time after is inauguration. On January 22nd, Kellyanne Conway, Advisor of Donald Trump used the euphemism “alternative facts” to describe the untruths given to the press in an interview where she was confronted with the fact, that the press secretary spread lies about the number of people that followed the swear-in ceremony Donald Trump as the new president of the US.

The government of the United States of America starts to confuse the americans and to let them doubt about the plausibility of the press. This is a desperate method, which is similar to the situation in a dictatorship.

We and the government of the US see this as a democracy. But a head of a democracy can not say that “the press does not tell the truth” or that themselve use “alternative facts”, when different statements do not correspond. Because in my oppinion this is a first approach for limited freedom of the press.
